Will Microsoft Bring Its Works Suite Online?

Microsoft is planning to Web-ify the core of its "Microsoft Works" consumer productivity suite, according to BusinessWeek. (Aha! Maybe that's what Office Online chief Rajesh Jha meant when he said Microsoft would extend its Office Online offerings to individual consumers.) When we asked for confirmation, a Microsoft spokeswoman said that plan is not set in stone. Microsoft is thinking what to do next with Works, she said, but the ultimate decision make take a variety of different forms. Works could become a hosted offering. It might end up as an ad-funded download. It might turn up as an ad-funded PC-based software program. Right now, nothing is set in stone, other than Works will morph in some way in 2007.
